Journey into AI: My Thrilling Internship Experience at North Light AI

North Light AI Intern Spotlight with Gersi Doko

CORE CONCEPTS AI

Intern Spotlight: Gersi Doko

Hi! I'm Gersi Doko, a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of New Hampshire. My research focuses on risk-averse AI and machine learning, particularly how these technologies influence autonomous systems and decision-making.

Over the past three years of pursuing my doctoral degree, I have explored the unique blend of AI and its real-world applications. This exciting path has led me to North Light AI, where I’ve had the chance to apply my knowledge outside the classroom and engage in practical scenarios that challenge me.

My AI and Tech Interests

I have always been fascinated by AI, especially its decision-making abilities in high-stakes situations. I thrive on exploring the intersection between theoretical frameworks and practical implementations.

On the tech side, I advocate for practical and impactful solutions. While many in the field discuss long-term breakthroughs, I believe in addressing existing problems often referred to as "low-hanging fruit." These quick wins can lead to immediate improvements. This hands-on approach is why I’m eager to be involved in projects that effect real change.

The Most Rewarding Aspects of My Internship

One of the most satisfying aspects of my internship at North Light AI has been applying my skills to real-world challenges. Working on projects with direct client involvement is incredibly fulfilling. I take pride in seeing how my contributions can influence the project's trajectory based on feedback from teammates and clients.

What has been most surprising is the variety of projects I’ve engaged in. Being part of several initiatives across different business areas has broadened my understanding of the industry. For instance, I worked on a marketing project—an area outside my usual expertise. This experience was enlightening and provided valuable insights into how diverse teams collaborate effectively to reach common objectives.

Lessons Gained from a Fast-Paced Environment

The work environment at North Light AI has been one of the most refreshing aspects of this internship, being highly collaborative with everyone open, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping each other succeed. The fast-paced nature of our projects forces me to adapt quickly, which is crucial in today's tech world.

One thing that stood out to me right away was how many different conversations and projects I could be involved in at once. I had the opportunity to participate in marketing and business development meetings—areas that fall outside my usual scope. This level of exposure isn’t something I’ve experienced, even at other tech companies. The startup culture here feels more dynamic and fluid compared to traditional tech or academic environments, and I’ve come to truly value the diverse perspectives it offers. These experiences have been eye-opening, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing as I move forward in my career.

Beyond the Code: Hobbies That Keep Me Grounded

When I’m not immersed in research or work, you’ll most likely find me outdoors or deep into a good book. Reading has become one of my go-to ways to unwind, and I also enjoy hiking, biking, and fishing, especially with my five-year-old white German Shepherd, Navi, who’s the perfect hiking companion.

Programming also plays a big role in my free time. I enjoy exploring personal and open-source projects outside of work, which helps me stay sharp and explore ideas that aren’t tied to deadlines or deliverables. My latest side project involves implementing various machine learning algorithms in Python from scratch. It's a hands-on way for me to deepen my understanding of the theory and mechanics behind the models I use.

Books That Changed My Thinking

Books have played a major role in shaping how I see the world, both in terms of decision-making and the way I approach technology, philosophy, and even everyday life. One that really stands out is Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths. It completely shifted the way I think about decision-making, offering a fresh lens on how computer science principles can apply to real-life challenges.

There are a few others that have been equally formative, each in their own way:

  • A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson – A fun, eye-opening look at science and our place in the universe.

  • Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig – A deep dive into the philosophy of quality and the balance between logic and emotion.

  • The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky – A powerful exploration of human nature, morality, and belief.

  • The Art of Computer Programming by Donald Knuth – A foundational text that’s helped frame how I approach the discipline of programming as both a craft and a science.

Each of these books has contributed to how I think, work, and problem-solve. I find myself coming back to them often for both inspiration and grounding.

Staying Sharp: My Go-To Productivity Tips

When it comes to staying productive, especially as a developer or someone in a technical field, I’ve found that small habits can make a big difference. Over time, I’ve built a few practices that help streamline my workflow and keep me focused:

  • Learn vim keybindings—it might seem intimidating at first, but once it clicks, it’ll speed up almost everything you do, even in the browser.

  • Reach for a text-based user interface (TUI) first. They’re lightweight, efficient, and often more customizable than GUI-based tools.

  • Take digital notes in Markdown, or LaTeX if needed—and commit them to your favorite git host. This keeps your knowledge base version-controlled and accessible across devices.

  • And above all: Always stay learning.

If I had to pick just one tip to live by, it would be that last one. In tech, continuous learning isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. The field moves fast, and staying curious is the best way to grow, stay relevant, and genuinely enjoy the journey.

From Kitchen to Code: Exploring the Art of Seamless Delivery

One concept I’m particularly excited to explore during my time at North Light AI is the process of gathering and executing on client requirements in a structured, disciplined way. It’s one thing to write code or build a model, but delivering a finished product that meets real needs requires coordination, clarity, and collaboration.

To put it in more familiar terms: think about dining at a restaurant. As a guest, your focus is on the final meal. But behind the scenes, there’s a well-orchestrated team in the kitchen, each person playing a role, every process timed just right to deliver that experience.

Software development is no different. It’s a complex effort that involves developers, designers, strategists, and clients, all working together.

I haven’t yet been part of a fully integrated product team, so I’m excited to see how that level of coordination plays out here at North Light AI and to contribute to it.

Looking Ahead: Future Aspirations

As I continue my internship, I am refining my research on risk-averse AI and machine learning. I aim to deeply understand the technology and contribute to its responsible real-world implementation. For example, I envision AI systems that can successfully navigate complex environments while ensuring safety and adhering to ethical standards.

My experience at North Light AI drives my desire to connect the dots between academia and industry. I am excited about the potential to develop innovative solutions that prioritize safety. In a world where technology is increasingly influential, I am committed to leveraging the benefits of AI while minimizing associated risks.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on my internship so far fills me with excitement. I'm thankful for the chance to collaborate with everyone at North Light AI, exploring the significant impact of AI on decision-making.

As I delve deeper into risk-averse AI and its various applications, I look forward to sharing my challenges and insights with aspiring engineers and researchers eager to make a difference in the tech industry.

This internship is more than just a step in my career; it shapes my path to becoming a contributor who delivers value through AI innovations. I encourage my fellow students to pursue opportunities that challenge them, as these often lead to the most rewarding experiences.

The intersection of AI and real-world applications is where I excel, and I am excited to continue this journey. Let’s explore the thrilling world of AI together!
